Party!  Come and celebrate the launch of the new album, “Song Book,” a vocal-piano jazz duo concept album by award-winning vocalist Roger Chung, featuring piano virtuoso Jezrael Lucero. 

First in Hong Kong: Vocal-piano duo album

The first of its kind in Hong Kong, and one of the very few in the world, this duo album has been described by Hong Kong’s own grandmaster of audiophile production Clarence Chang as “instantly creating history” and “one profound piece of work that will stand the test of time!” 

Back to basics

Inspired by the classic Tony Bennett/Bill Evans vocal-piano duo album released in 1975, Roger conceptualised the album with the aim of returning to music’s purest form, with just his own vocals and Jezrael’s piano artistry.  This is Roger’s debut solo venture outside of his Chung Brothers group, an award-winning and best-selling gospel-blues-jazz group that he formed with his brother Henry.

Hong Kong’s Song Book, Hong Kong’s cultural heritage

The album is an unofficial collection of classic Cantopop standards.  Its title, “Song Book”, is modelled after the Great American Songbook.  This concept of Hong Kong’s own jazz standards was first devised by Clarence Chang with his now-classic production of Danny Summer’s “am” (1998), and is now further extended with “Song Book,” in which each of these once-commercial products is treated as a serious piece of Hong Kong’s unique art and culture.  Eleven songs from the Cantopop repertoire from the period 1981-2002 have been given the jazz-standard treatment to honour the work of 12 individual composers – from the forefathers of the genre Joseph Koo, Samuel Hui and George Lam to masterful tunesmiths Violet Lam, Lowell Lo, Dominic Chung and Jim Lau, alternative rockers Tats Lau, Anthony Wong and Jason Choi, and important latter-day singer-songwriters Clayton Cheung and Chet Lam.  Roger also wrote a completely new composition, “Stardust Melodies”, to pay tribute to all the musicians who have given Cantopop audiences sublime music over the years.  The result is an ode to beautiful melodies, dreams and starlight that gave meaning to our lives.   

Authenticity: Live takes!

Lastly, the album was recorded live in the studio over the course of five days, a very short duration by industry standards.  The vocals and the piano were recorded together simultaneously.  The concert at Fringe Club will relive the magic that happened in the studio, and will capture the spontaneity and authenticity of jazz readings of these Cantopop standards.
