Synopsis
“Art ought to pursue beauty. There is neither narrative nor any philosophical ideas in my work. The exploration of aesthetics should be led by feelings.
We should know ourselves before exploring the aesthetic. The artist Vassily Kandinsky believed that artists should satisfy their “inner needs”. I interpret his words to mean that “artists ought to express their feelings honestly”. Pursuing the culture found in “positive liberty”, every artwork should be a creation, not a forgery.
During my creative process, I explore subjective feelings. I can exhibit my freedom, which is not limited by authority or controlled by chance. It is an expression that is both honest and rigorous. This exhibition emphasises the courage of aesthetic judgement. I listen to my will, give myself orders, and accept responsibility for the results.”
Liu Chi-hang graduated in France and returned to Hong Kong in 2015. He never chooses a theme for his work before creating it, which allows him to be inspired by his kaleidoscopic vision of the world. Inspiration can come from Nature, a human body, a logo on the street or even an image on the internet. Their form is then twisted, transformed and distorted, finally becoming an individual sign. Eventually, they do not have any objective description and are reformulated on a canvas.
His works are inspired by the construction of traditional Chinese characters and the colours of Western modern art.
