Do you know your Beethoven from your Schubert? What do Chopin and Scriabin have in common? How do Samuel Barber and George Gershwin incorporate jazz in their music?
In this concert, Nicolette Wong explores three periods in Western classical music by imagining a conversation between two significant composers from each period. By pairing together works in the same genre for each duologue, she seeks to show how each composer tested the boundaries of the genre in order to bring out his own voice. Through this, she’ll take you on a journey from the time of German Idealism in Europe through to the arrival of European immigrants in America. The concert will end with two transcriptions by the contemporary Turkish pianist and composer Fazil Say, which are themselves duologues between him and the original composers.
Nicolette Wong returned to Hong Kong after receiving her Master of Arts from the University of Cambridge and her Master of Music from the Royal Academy of Music.
She has given recitals for the Liszt Society and the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe, and was invited by the LCSD to give a solo recital in Hong Kong as part of the “Our Music Talents” series. She has appeared in recitals and as concerto soloist in Greece, Poland, France, the UK and the greater China region, collaborating with conductors such as David Josefowicz and Peter Stark. She has also recorded interviews and solo recitals for RTHK.
Nicolette writes regularly for Interlude, the online music magazine. She is an Executive Committee member of the Hong Kong Musician Association and serves frequently on the jury for piano competitions in Asia. Eager to make classical music more accessible to the wider public, Nicolette founded and is currently the Programme Director of “The Sound of Art” Sunday Concert Series at the Hong Kong Museum of Art. As a committed music educator, she founded Mousa Music Chambers, where she teaches piano and music appreciation.
