Synopsis
Huang Yulong was born in 1983 in Huainan, Anhui Province, China. In 2007 he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute in Jiangsu Province. Huang a young "post 80s" artist from Anhui Province, China, is known as one of the outstanding artists representing the new generation. He has been chosen by Complex, an American Magazine, as one of the “25 Chinese Contemporary Artists You Need to Know”. His works received numerous awards and have been exhibited in France, Korea, Beijing, Shanghai, Macau and Hong Kong.
For this first and ever solo exhibition in Hong Kong, Huang Yulong will showcase 12 art pieces, including “Beside Me”, the sculpture which has never been exhibited in the public, and “On The Way”, his first large-scale sculpture creation, and “Beginner’s Mind”, his latest work in 2015.
This young “post 80s” Chinese artist is strongly influenced by the western culture. Huang’s works are unique and avant-garde. He is good at making use of different materials such as porcelain, bronze, aluminium and crystal, to transform traditional Chinese ideas into western hip-hop style sculptures through his exquisite craftsmanship, displaying a convergence of Western and Eastern styles, an urban aesthetic with classical underpinning. The Bodhisattva series in this exhibition can perfectly demonstrated his strength of using hip-hop imagery to tell a traditional Chinese legend story. His works has successfully brought this contemporary art to a higher level, and at the same time, combining collective pieces and home décor into one.
