Quietly in Bloom: The Painted World of Yip Wing-wai

Throughout his artistic career, Hong Kong artist Yip Wing-wai (1932–2023) moved between the city streets and the inner landscapes of mountains and seas. In the 1960s, he turned to watercolour to capture Hong Kong’s streetscapes and the rapidly changing city around him. After relocating to the United States, he gradually moved beyond the visible world, developing a freer, more vivid and imaginative approach to works on paper and mixed media. In his paintings, mountains and seas rise and fall like waves, sky and water merge into one another, while horses move through mist and moonlight, and all things drift within an almost dreamlike space.

Focusing primarily on Yip Wing-wai’s later works, this exhibition presents the distinctive artistic world he created through saturated colours, vivid lines and decorative compositions. In celebration of the Year of the Horse, a selection of works featuring horses has been specially chosen. The galloping horses express not only strength and movement, but also the imagination of distant journeys, freedom and vitality. Carefully preserved by Yip Wing-wai’s family for many years, the works on view are being presented to the public for the first time, offering visitors a rare opportunity to encounter a lesser-known yet deeply compelling dimension of the artist’s creative world.

From his attentive observations of Hong Kong’s streets to his richly coloured inner landscapes of mountains and seas, Yip Wing-wai created quietly and steadfastly throughout his life, leaving behind an artistic world waiting to be rediscovered.
