Synopsis

Us — the city, vegetation, it and I.
At times we coexist; at times we collide.
Often, we attempt to negotiate.  Yet we are still stuck.  We meander through the cracks of the city as we search idly for a space of our own to hide.

In side, three artists aim to express the ways they each view everyday living.  These ways are expressed through an object, a position or the limitation of a particular viewpoint — such circumstances often signal the boundaries between different subjectivities.

The exhibition touches on the themes of Nature and the Self, The City and Objects, and Life and Other Banalities.  The sense of alienation hidden in life is captured in images of a withered tree branch, a window, a mountain...  The artists invite viewers to experience the different modes in which the city interacts with nature.  By examining these often-overlooked details, we may gain insight into the unknown beyond our quotidian existence.

About the Artists

Lai Ching-ching
Lai graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014.  She is fascinated by cell movement, so the growth and decay of plants and the synthesis of oneself, objects and individuality are common themes in her artworks.  Through interwoven metal, material and installation, she explores complex concepts.

Lam Hau-yi
Lam, a Hong Kong-based artist and designer, obtained her BA (Hons) Visual Arts from Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014 and her BA (Hons) Visual Communication from Birmingham City University in 2012, and was an exchange student at the Academy of Fine Art in Tunghai University in 2013.

In her creative journey, she explores life through looking, drawing and thinking.  By micro-observing highly familiar images, she redefines the experience of seeing mundane objects and provides new meaning to seemingly trivial objects.  In their stillness, these objects gain an aesthetic quality, portraying a certain degree of delicacy and beauty.  Her works have been exhibited in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Berlin.

Ting Sze-lok
Ting graduated from the Academy of Visual Arts of Hong Kong Baptist University with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) degree in 2014, and works primarily in the medium of painting.  She enjoys observing quotidian scenes in life that are so often taken for granted.  Her artistic practice revolves around piecing together these banal elements to create a microcosm of its own.
