Synopsis
Every year, students in Hong Kong are encouraged to participate in a theme-based Christmas card design competition hosted by the Australian Consulate-General. This year's theme is “A Very Aussie Christmas”.
Whether people are celebrating on Australia's famous ocean coastline, in lush tropical forests or in the dry, sandy outback, Christmas is about spending time with friends and family.
This competition is to encourage young artists to start their own cultural exploration of how they might celebrate Christmas in an Australian summer, which is very different to how those who live in the Northern Hemisphere might do so. In a country like Australia in the southern hemisphere, Christmas comes in the middle of a very hot summer. Images of snow, fireplaces and warm clothing are not those that are common for Australians. Many Australians spend their Christmas outdoors, at a beach or camping. Christmas Dinner may be a barbeque in the backyard or a picnic on a beach or in a park.
The competition also aims to promote thought among young students about cultural traditions, as well as foster friendship between Australia and Hong Kong.
The artwork can be hand-drawn or computer designed. Students entered in one of four categories: Junior Primary (primary 1 to 3); Senior Primary (primary 4 to 6); Junior Secondary (secondary 1 to 3); and Senior Secondary (secondary 4 to 6).
Four winning designs are used as the official Christmas greetings of the Australian Consulate-General Hong Kong, while one is selected as the Consul-General’s personal Christmas greeting card.
