Synopsis
My Australian Christmas Card Competition 2018
Merry Christmas, Mate!
Primary and secondary students in Hong Kong were encouraged to participate in a theme-based Christmas card design competition hosted by the Australian Consulate-General.
Christmas is about spending time with friends, family and the people you love. It is a time to remember, a time for sharing, and a time to express openly what these important relationships mean to you.
In Australia, a 'mate' is more than just a friend. It is a term that implies a sense of shared experience, mutual respect and unconditional support.
This competition aims to encourage young artists to start their own cultural exploration of how they might celebrate Christmas in an Australian summer, which is very different from Christmas as experienced in the Northern Hemisphere. In Australia, in the Southern Hemisphere, it is filled with blue skies and possibly intense heat. Many Australians spend their Christmas outdoors, at a beach or camping. Christmas Lunch might be a barbeque in the backyard or a picnic on a beach or in a park.
The competition also aims to promote thought among young students about cultural traditions, as well as foster friendship between Australia and Hong Kong.
The artwork can be hand-drawn or computer designed. Students entered in one of four categories: Junior Primary (primary 1 to 3); Senior Primary (primary 4 to 6); Junior Secondary (secondary 1 to 3); and Senior Secondary (secondary 4 to 6).
Four winning designs are used as the official Christmas greetings of the Australian Consulate-General Hong Kong, while one is selected as the Consul-General’s personal Christmas greeting card.
