Synopsis
In an evening of exciting and eclectic vibraphone music, percussionist Dr. Matthew Lau will take you all over the world with pieces from the United States, Australia and Argentina, ranging from traditional jazz classics to contemporary avant-garde electronic music.
Hailed by The Aspen Times for his “soulful and technically impressive solo” at his vibraphone concerto debut at the Aspen Music Festival, Matthew performs a wide repertoire, with an absolute commitment to communicating the meaning and essence of percussion music to his audiences, from an arrangement of Bach’s Violin Sonata on marimba to contemporary avant-garde pieces by Franco Donatoni and Iannis Xenakis.
With a strong interest in contemporary percussion music, he aims to expand the ever-growing percussion repertoire by pushing existing boundaries, incorporating electronics and technology, discovering new sounds, and commissioning new pieces by renowned composers.
A finalist at the 2016 Italy Percussive Arts Society Competition in the Vibraphone Category, Matthew performs around the world. As an avid chamber musician, he is a co-founder and one half of the percussion duo Fisher/Lau Project with fellow percussionist Abby Fisher, and a member of the Contemporary Chamber Players at Stony Brook University.
A native of Hong Kong, Matthew gained his undergraduate degree from Hong Kong Baptist University, his Master of Music from New York University, and his Doctorate of Musical Arts in contemporary percussion performance from Stony Brook University.
Dr. Lau is the artist endorser of Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets, and Black Swamp Percussion.
