Synopsis
Kenny Leung graduated from the Hong Kong Art School in 2007. His works are based on fragments and memories of old buildings in Hong Kong, reproducing the relationship between space and human beings.
The title of this exhibition, Hong Kong Trilogy, is the same as that of a series of Hong Kong-inspired novellas by the author Shi Shuqing. Kenny borrows the protagonist from the novellas to represent the increasingly older Hong Kong, which has lost its young face.
Kenny wandered around and observed different places in Hong Kong, recording their past, present and future. He noticed that the old Hong Kong was constantly confined and restructured until it was gradually used up, and it eventually disappeared. Examples include the Wo Cheong pawn shop and Lee Tung Street in Wan Chai, and the Yau Ma Tei Wholesale Fruit Market.
The works in the Trilogy are connected mainly by the artist’s use of three different media: watercolours, prints and oil paintings. The artist uses watercolours, a pen, a carving knife, photography, acrylics and other forms to re-examine Hong Kong and express his feelings about it.
