Synopsis

Every year, students in Hong Kong are encouraged to participate in a competition to design Christmas cards, hosted by the Australian Consulate-General, with the idea of connecting communities during the festive season.

The purpose of the competition is to encourage young artists to start their own cultural exploration of how they might celebrate Christmas in an Australian summer, which is very different to how people celebrate it in northern-hemisphere locations like Hong Kong.  In southern-hemisphere countries like Australia, Christmas comes in the middle of a very hot summer.  Images of snow, fireplaces and warm clothing are not common for Australians.  Many Australians spend their Christmas outdoors at a beach or camping, and Christmas dinner might be a barbeque in the backyard or a picnic on a beach or in a park.

Christmas is a time for family and friends to get together.  We should not miss this opportunity to remember, share and express with words and gifts what the spirit of Christmas means to all of us.

Australia and Hong Kong are great friends and partners, with a strong connection that has lasted for over 200 years.  We hope this competition will prompt young students to think about cultural traditions, and also foster friendship between Australia and Hong Kong.

Students entered the competition in one of four categories: Junior Primary (primary 1 to 3);  Senior Primary (primary 4 to 6);  Junior Secondary (secondary 1 to 3);  and Senior Secondary (secondary 4 to 6).

Four winning designs are used as the official Christmas greeting card of the Australian Consulate-General Hong Kong, while one is selected as the Consul-General’s personal Christmas greeting card.
