Synopsis

“This show is a return trip to my paintings of past years, a bit like revisiting a once-familiar place.  At the same time, it seems to me that I am professing my love once again.

Painting scenery on canvas is a kind of mental excursion.  My work, as an ambiguous spiritual space, is not the interpretation of landscape in the real world.  Dynamic imaginations of constantly changing rhythms are shaped by the visual effects, imagery and sentiments.  Most of my works in the 2000s include things that can be found in daily life, such as chairs and windows, flowers and insects, but the background shows patterns of motion interwoven with layers of colour and brush strokes.  The boundaries between indoor and outdoor are blurred, and a sense of chaotic space gradually appears.”

About the Artist

Tsang Chui-mei was born in 1972, and obtained her Bachelors degree and her Masters degree in Fine Arts from the Department of Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1996 and 2004 respectively.  She was selected to participate in a three-month residency program at Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris, France) in 2015.

She always depicts imaginary scenery.  Whether using generous or gloomy colours, she presents an ambiguous spiritual space in her paintings.

Her works have been collected by the Hong Kong Museum of Art, the Hong Kong Fringe Club, the Philippe Charriol Foundation, Hotel ICON, Hotel Stage and private collectors.
