Are you tired of typical Cantopop music, and are you looking for a change? But is it possible to combine Chinese music and jazz music? And how can dance collaborate with jazz?
Presented by the Fringe Club as part of the new “Jazz-Go-Central, Jazz-Go-Fringe” project – Phase II, Jazz + is a series of cross-over performances between jazz and other genres that will happen every month from October 2018 to May 2019.
The Jazz+ show in February will be hosted by leading local fusion band SIU2. They’ll perform their original and unique music that merges jazz with traditional Chinese instruments. Come and experience the extraordinary impact of Chinese and Western musical elements colliding and fusing with each other. It’s time to break the boundaries of fusion jazz!
Ng Cheuk-yin (composition, sheng and electric organ), Jason Lau (zheng), Cass Lam (sanxian), Peter Fan (piano), Siuming Chan (bass guitar), Lawrence Tsui (drums)
SIU2
SIU2 is a renowned fusion band from Hong Kong. The sheng, a musical instrument with its roots from ancient China no less than three millennia ago, leads the organism’s process of sound-weaving together with the sanxian, zheng, piano, bass guitar and drums. The resulting musical tapestry flows seamlessly through the East and West, past and present, while breaking down the borders between genres. SIU2 is a sonic portrayal of the juxtaposition of disparate cultural elements in Hong Kong. Its sound is one-of-a-kind – definitely not something you’ll hear anywhere else.
After debuting at the 2008 Hong Kong Arts Festival show “Sheng It Up” and the New Visions Arts Festival that same year, SIU2 presented concerts at the Hong Kong City Hall Theatre in 2010 and 2012. Its concert, “A Musical Odyssey Beyond Time”, was presented in 2017 by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council as part of the Jockey Club’s “New Arts Power” project. In recognition of its unique brand of sound, the band has also been invited to perform at several music festivals outside of Hong Kong.
SIU2 will release their 4th album in mid-2019.
