Synopsis
Want to practise your improvisation skills and jam with a jazz band? Here’s your chance! Presented by the Fringe Club as one of the programmes of the “Jazz-Go-Central, Jazz-Go-Fringe” project, Open Platform provides opportunities for young, amateur musicians to jam and improvise with professional artists and bands.
Improvisation is a key aspect of jazz. It is fun to play, improvise, take risks, and jam as a team. As a famous saying goes, “Once is a mistake, twice is jazz.”
In this fifth Open Platform show, the host band is led by Alan Kwan (guitar), joined by Patrick Lui (piano), Wong Tak-chung (bass) and Ted Lo (drums). They’ll open with a set of American jazz standards, then they’ll invite audience-members to step up and jam with them!

Alan Kwan is a Hong Kong-born jazz guitarist, composer and educator. He started playing guitar at the age of 14, and soon decided to devote himself to jazz, studying with Ted Lo and Eugene Pao.

Kwan has performed a wide variety of gigs in Hong Kong, New York, Texas, Tokyo and Taiwan, with many renowned musicians. He has also taught master classes in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and was a semi-finalist in the 2016 and 2017 International Songwriting Competition (USA).
