Synopsis
Want to practise your improvisation skills and jam with a jazz band? Here’s your chance! Presented by the Fringe Club as one of the programmes of the “Jazz-Go-Central, Jazz-Go-Fringe” project, Open Platform provides opportunities for young, amateur musicians to jam and improvise with professional artists and bands.
Improvisation is a key aspect of jazz. It is fun to play, improvise, take risks, and jam as a team. As a famous saying goes, “Once is a mistake, twice is jazz.”
In the first Open Platform show, the host band is led by Ray Wang (guitar), joined by Wong Tak Chung (bass), Rod Chui (piano) and Samuel Chan (drums). After a warm-up set, they’ll invite audience-members to come and jam with them!
Ray Wang
Producer, Composer, Arranger and Jazz Guitarist. Ray started his musical career as a record producer, composer and arranger, working with Hong Kong artists and all major record labels here. He has also been an arranger for production companies in Taiwan, including Rock Records, WEA Taiwan and Forwards Records.
Ray has created a website for non-commercial music, called “Music In Music.com”, focusing on jazz and indie music. The site has covered many jazz and music festivals around Asia, and posts interviews with living legends such as McCoy Tyner, George Benson, Ahmad Jamal, Ron Carter, Tommy Emmanuel, Mike Stern, Kenny Garrett, Jeff Berlin, Matt Garrison, Robben Ford, Hiromi Uehara, Antonio Hart, Gregory Porter, Joe Bonamassa and many others. Supporting the local music scene is a major mission of the site, which supports all major local music festivals and promotes local indie bands and artists. Ray loves live music played by human beings, so he’ll continue to support live music.
