Girls' Adventure Stories of Long Ago

The poems in this collection beat with a lyric intensity that will leave you breathless.  Holmes casts her gaze on the awesome, the cryptic, the domestic, and the surreal with equal mastery.  Reading a Holmes poem makes me feel like I am knee-deep in gold coins.” – Kate North, author of Bistro (Cinnamon, 2012) and Eva Shell (Cinnamon, 2008)

“Suffused with originality, tenderness, and a fierce regard for woman’s fate, Viki Holmes’s latest offering is an entire universe unto its own. These poems are at once driven, rigorous, and open, like intense thought, and yet much of their wit, music, humour, and sensuality seem to have come from another place – somewhere magical. What is rarer still, they are wise to the minutiae of a girl’s inner life, attuned to its joys, wonder, and disappointments, and deft in their reinvention of mythology as a reminder of what it means to be human.”  - Laksmi Pamuntjak, author of Amba/The Question of Red (Gramedia Pustaka Utama, 2012) and Aruna And her Palate (Gramedia Pustaka Utama, 2014)

“Viki Holmes’ second collection of poetry charts the life of a girl’s own heroine as she emerges from a childhood rich in fantasy and play to undergo trials and tribulations in a world where hope and love are in short supply. Holmes has delved into the mythic narratives that drive our need of heroes, and inhabits these figures deeply, for they exist as eternal. These are all poems of deep imagination, lyricism, playfulness, and grace, and make the most of the poet’s unique location between East and West…with the hard-won erudition that has come with that. Readers who love craft will appreciate Viki Holmes’ mastery of both Oriental and Western literary forms, the flexibility of tone and voice, and the brilliance.” – Adam Aitken, author of One Hundred Letters Home (Vagabond Press, 2016) and Eighth Habitation (Giramondo, 2008)
