Synopsis

Fifty Shades of INK, the theme of independent visual artist Danny Liu’s latest solo exhibition (from 23 to 29 August) presenting a body of works, constitutes an ideology for experimenting the contemporaneity of Chinese ink, one of the most distinctive mediums of Chinese art grounded in a fine art heritage and aesthetic bedrock dating more than 1,000 years. Having ventured previously with the vast versatility on rice paper and smaller-scaled installations, Danny has undertaken a mission on juggling between conventional and contemporary ink, creating exponential artistic expression through its black and white aesthetics yet on a larger scale in 2016.

Cited by South China Morning Post (October 2014) as a master of fine art's graduate who has exhibited his works in Melbourne, Seoul, Singapore, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong. Liu brings to art aficionados this August Fifty Shades of INK, inviting both the artist and the viewers to testify the notions of consumption and displacement, revolving around the artist's perspectives among cityscape, nature and human habits, while depicting the perplexed mindscape conjuring up powerful metaphors of nature and void, and hinting the trend that Chinese ink has developed beyond the rigid constraints of tradition, and now addresses modernity through a revolutionary artistic language that remains respectful of ancient models.

A RMIT University Master of Fine Arts graduate with his works collected by Zhong Shan Art Museum and private collectors across Asia, and having hosted workshops at Chinese University Hong Kong (New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies), Academy of Performing Arts and Dan's Studio. Danny was raised in Australia during his adolescence, and has a vivid passion in producing complicated forms of art works through the mediums of traditional and contemporary ink. Since its inception in May 2013, Dan’s Studio has continuously received a wave of media limelight, and Danny has scooped several accolades including the Outstanding Award (Chinese painting category) awarded by Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre and recently, the “40 Under 40” Award (Art category) by Perspective Magazine.
