Synopsis

Arthur Conan Doyle invented one of the most successful literary characters ever. Holmes is brilliant, cerebral, scientific. His creator too trained as a scientist, but he was also a romantic. He responded generously to the world about him, frequently campaigning against injustices. Popular and respected, he wrote crime and horror stories, historical and science fiction. Yet many came to think of him as a gullible old fool, a fervent spiritualist who believed in the authenticity of photographs of fairies. Douglas Kerr unravels the paradoxes surrounding the most famous crime writer of them all.
