Synopsis

This event will be conducted in Cantonese.

More Than a Label: This is Our Story is a new book from local mental-health charity Mind HK in partnership with the Jardine Matheson Group’s charity initiative, MINDSET, which hopes to influence the public’s perceptions of people with diagnosable mental-health conditions.  This book encourages the public to look beyond the stigmatising labels associated with mental-health diagnoses.  It’s a collection of personal stories of mental-health journeys, showcasing realistic portrayals of people who have faced mental-health crises, their recovery journey and their holistic identity.  This book hopes to raise awareness of the stigma for people with mental-health conditions, celebrate the resilience and strength of people in recovery, and educate and equip the public with knowledge to support themselves and others when in need.  At this event, Ophelia Tam of Mind HK moderates a conversation with three Mind HK Ambassadors, Jonathan, Xanthe and Hilary, who share their stories and mental-health journeys.

Mind HK is a registered S88 charity (91/16471) that is committed to improving awareness and understanding of mental health in Hong Kong.  It collaborates with other local and international mental-health charities and provides online support and training programmes, based on global best practice, to empower anyone experiencing a mental-health problem and equip them with the resources they need.  Through collaborative research, Mind HK is leading the way in understanding mental-health problems in the city and providing its population with the right support and resources.

Featuring
Ophelia supports Mind HK’s website resources and campaigns, and is part of the team for the anti-stigma campaign “More Than a Label”.  She believes that raising public awareness of mental health is the ultimate first step to improving mental health, and is passionate about using educational content and creative ways to create a safe and supportive environment in Hong Kong so that mental-health conversations are normalised.

Jonathan has been involved in education and sustainable development for many years.  Although it takes time to cope with Attention Hyperactivity Deficit Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder, he hopes that by sharing his story he can send the message that a positive lifestyle and the ability to suggest what others can do to help can help relieve ASD and ADHD.

Xan, born and raised in Hong Kong, has dealt with anxiety and depression.  She loves going to the theatre, doing yoga, learning languages and doing outdoor activities.

Hilary is a creative media and brand specialist who enjoys focusing on her holistic health and wellness through working out and practising mindfulness.
