Synopsis

The evening will open with short Kathak pieces choreographed specifically for Jane by her Kathak teacher, critically acclaimed choreographer and Kathak dancer - Amina Khayyam, followed by the premiere of Void (work-in-progress); an arresting piece, choreographed and performed by Jane; an exploration of expression when faced with a lack of means.

Search - an evening of solo works choreographed for and by Jane; exploring her identity as a dance artist through the movement vocabulary she embodied through her training and career. It also enquires into Jane’s artistic adventures away from home since her departure in 2006.

Void (work-in-progress)
An arresting brand-new piece, a continual journey of self-discovery, -recognition and -reflection.
Sensitised by technology and social media, it seems convincing that almost everyone has a voice…
How would expression be when faced with a lack of means?
How would dance be when faced with a lack of space?

"...Jane Chan's exquisite solo performance…left an indelible mark on the audience." – Pulse (on A Thousand Faces by Amina Khayyam Dance Company)

Jane Chan - Choreographer | Dance Artist
Jane is a London-based dance artist, trained in Kathak, ballet, contemporary dance, Chinese classical and Chinese folk dance. She graduated from University of Surrey with an MA in Dance Cultures in 2013. She has been a member of Amina Khayyam Dance Company since 2014 and tours across the UK, Europe and internationally. Jane also performs across art forms with musicians, visual artists, photographers and filmmakers. Some of them include: Gigi Giannella, Jihye Kim, Joonhong Min, Roxi Rahmanzadeh, Simon Richardson, Moi Tran, Katja Verheul and Zadie Xa. In 2015, Jane founded Passion Project, her teaching initiative with the belief that the sheer joy of dancing is universal. Having witnessed the power of music and dance on her late grandmother, Jane also conducts adult community classes with a special focus on the elderly and those with dementia. She is the London Correspondent for dancejournal/hk and a mentor for Arts Emergency, supporting young people who wish to pursue dance as a career. To further her understanding and development of the body as well as broaden her movement vocabulary, she has been training in Wing Chun since 2014.
